Monument MPM1781 - Limestone foundation, north side Dry Dock No. 3

Stone foundation observed on the north side of Dry Dock No.3 during an archaeological watching brief in 2010. Possibly the foundation to a timber building which roofed the dock during the mid-19th century.

A foundation constructed from limestone slabs was observed on the north side of Dry Dock No.3 in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard during an archaeological watching brief in 2010. This may have been the foundation to a timber building which roofed the dock during the mid-19th century.

The foundation measured 1.60m x 1.50m x 0.80m deep and was approximately 0.30m below ground level. It had been built into a rubble hardcore sub-structure. The north and part of the south side had been truncated. The structure abutted the north-east corner of a stone chute which pre-dated it (see MPM1777). The foundation was dated to 1830-1950.
