Monument MPM1782 - Cobbled floor surface and wall, Historic Dockyard

Late-19th/early-20th century cobbled floor surface and wall observed during an archaeological watching brief in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in 2010.

Late-19th/early-20th century floor surface observed 0.25m below ground level in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard during an archaeological watching brief in 2010. The floor consisted of rounded dark reddish/brown cobbles 80mm-180mm in diameter laid on a mortar bed with a wall at the northern end. The wall had been crudely built using small irregular shaped roughly finished limestone and granite blocks, cobbled stones and very occasional pieces of timber. It measured 0.50m x 0.62m x 0.08m high. The floor surface appeared to be associated with a building constructed in c1901 (demolished), and could be seen to abut a brick foundation wall belonging this building.
