Building MPM1785 - North Pumping Station (No. 4) building 2/239

Early-20th century Neoclassical three bay engine house built in 1913. The pumping station originally housed two steam driven horizontal impeller type main dock pumps and two smaller drainage pumps, one of which was electronically driven. The walls are constructed of brick with stucco having been used on the lower 6ft. Evidence of repair is suggested by the variation of brickwork used. Naval arms with the date 1913 and 'GR' survive above the east elevation. Inside the house are four brick lined wells c17-20m deep and 4m wide.

The pumping station has been continually serving the locks to the north and south since its construction in the early 20th century.
