Monument MPM1797 - Site of Eastney Farm

Site of Eastney Farm. Eastney was a medieval manor and a homestead is shown in this area on maps dating from c1600 onwards. The site was redeveloped for housing between 1920 and 1932.

Site of Eastney Farm. A farm is shown in this area of Portsea Island on maps dating back as far as c1600, with the name spelt in various ways as 'Ealney', 'Estney' and 'Eastney [1-3]. Eastney was a manor of Portsea Island by the end of the 14th century [4], and therefore it is possible that a medieval farmstead had existed within this area.

Between 1722 and 1831 the manor of Eastney, and the farm, were owned by the White family [4]. The 1838 Tithe Apportionment for the parish of Portsea records the farm as a homestead with garden, marsh and pond, occupied by John Ellis, the land owned by Sir P. H. Durham [5]. A large part of the farm was sold to the government in 1845 [4], but the homestead is shown on Ordnance Survey maps up until 1910 [6-8]. The Kelly's Directory for 1920 records a Henry Stride, farmer, at Eastney Farm [9]. By 1932 the area had been developed for housing [10].
