Monument MPM1808 - Site of toll cottage and toll gate Portsbridge

Site of toll house and gate for the turnpike at Portsbridge, as depicted on the Wymering Tithe map of 1839. The toll gate was part of the Sheet to Portsmouth turnpike set up by an Act of Parliament in 1711. The 1839 tithe apportionment records the cottage and garden as being owned by 'John Powell & others as trustees of the turnpike' and occupied by James Jacobs. The toll house and gate are not marked on the 1870 Ordnance Survey map, by which the London Road had been relocated to the west to allow to Portsea Island through the remodelled Hilsea Lines.
