Full Description

Site of former homestead known as 'Upper Farm', 'West Wymering Farm' and 'Wymering Farm' situated to the north of Wymering Manor. The homestead is marked on the 1839 tithe map as Upper Farm and recorded on the accompanying apportionment as being in the occupation of Arthur Octavius Baker. [1, 2] By 1910 the name had changed to West Wymering Farm. [3]The homestead and outbuildings are still marked on the 1932 Ordnance Survey map, but the site had been redeveloped by 1952. [4, 5]

Upper Farm was the northern most of three farms in Wymering (see MPM647 & MPM1354). More research is needed in order to establish how long a homestead existed on the site. Three messuages/tenement farm lands in the parish of Wymering are mentioned in a will of William Elson of Widley dated 1747, but the exact locations of these are not known, and the parish extended beyond the settlement of Wymering.
