Monument MPM1810 - Site of Stubbington Farm
Summary
Map
Type and Period (1)
Full Description
Site of former homestead to Stubbington Farm. The manor of Stubbington was in existence by the late-14th century, when it was held by Southwick Priory [1]. In 1543 the manor together with its farm and rectories, was granted by Henry VIII to St Mary's College, Winchester [1]. Buildings are represented in the area of the homestead on a map dated 1666-70, and the farm is clearly marked on Edward's map of 1716 [2, 3]. During the 18th and 19th centuries the estate was leased to the Thistlethwayte family of Southwick, who sublet the farm to tenant farmers. Thomas Fitzherbert was tenant from 1780 until 1822, and then John Burrill [1]. The Portsea tithe apportionment of 1838 records the homestead and Stubbington House (marked on the Ordnance Survey maps as Stubbington Lodge) in the occupation of Mary Kent and others [4]. The farm buildings and Stubbington Lodge are still marked on the 1898 Ordnance Survey map but the site had been redeveloped by 1910 [5, 6].
The Lodge appears to have been occupied by the tenant farmers and classed as the manor house, certainly by the 19th century. It was situated c70m north-east of the homestead to the farm.
