Monument MPM1835 - Site of Farlington House

Site of Farlington House demolished c1950s/60s. The house was probably built during the early-19th century and appears on the 1838 Farlington tithe map. A block of flats built during the 1960s now stands on the site.

Farlington House stood on the north side of Havant Road from at least 1838, and was demolished sometime between 1952 and the 1960s when a block of flats was built on the site [1, 2, 3]. The Farlington tithe map and apportionment of 1838 records the building as a 'Mansion House' belonging to Samuel Gloyne, the owner of Farlington Farm [4]. The house is listed among the buildings belonging to Farlington Farm in an advert for the sale of the farm which appeared in the Globe and Traveller on the 13th September 1848 [6]. This describes the house as a 'Modern Residence', and it is therefore possible that it dated to no earlier than the early-19th century. An advert for the sale of the household furniture which appeared in the Hampshire Telegraph on the 11th October 1873 listed contents from the following rooms; drawing room, dining room, library, breakfast rooms, eight bedchambers and a hall [6].

The house had been altered between 1898 and 1910, as the shape of the building had changed and it had been extended [7, 8]. By 1898 a small outbuilding had been built to the north [7]. The house and outbuilding are still marked on the 1952 Ordnance Survey map [2].

A block of flats built in the 1960s now stands on the site, but archaeological remains may survive beneath the open spaces to the rear of the building [3].
