Full Description
The Hampshire Rural Settlements survey records that the first documentary reference to Farlington was in 1186, although it is possible that it predates the surviving documentary sources. According to the VCH Farlington was originally a royal manor. [1]
Farlington is recorded as a deserted medieval village by Beresford and Hurst [2], but if this was the case, as with Wymering, it was later repopulated.
Farlington is marked on a map by La Fabvolliere dated c1665, where it is shown as a settlement similar in size to Wymering. However, as maps of this date do not include geographically accurate depictions of towns and villages, it is not possible to determine the exact size or location of the settlement. Farlington appears to be marked to the south of Portsdown with a settlement around the church, but the parish encompassed lands both to the north and south of Portsdown hill. [3, 4]
Settlement shown on the 1838 tithe map largely consisted of the church and vicarage, Farlington House and Farlington Farm to the west, Lower Farlington Farm to the south, and a few cottages [1, 5]. This is a similar pattern to Wymering where the 1839 settlement principally consisted of church and vicarage, manor house and three farms (see MPM1834). The area was developed for housing during the 20th century.
