Monument MPM1844 - Timber, north-east of Dry Dock 4

A well preserved timber was recorded in a service trench to the north-east of Dry Dock No. 4 during a watching brief in 2009. The timber was not fully exposed, but had a diameter of 330mm where observed. The trench was 0.25m deep. No conversion appeared to have been made to the shaft. The timber was interpreted as a vertically driven pile or post. Its exact function is unknown, but it is possible that it had been used during the construction of the dock.
