Monument MPM1873 - Site of Lower Farlington Farm

Site of Lower Farm, Farlington. Also known as Farlington Marsh Farm and Lower Farlington Farm. The farm appears to have been in existance since at least 1810, and was possibly of an earlier date. The farm house and farm buildings were demolished post-1952 and the site was redeveloped. It is now a housing estate.

The farm appears to have been in existence since at least 1810, as the Ordnance Survey map of this date marks a group of buildings which correspond to the location of the homestead as recorded on later maps. [1]

The farm is recorded on the Farlington Tithe Map and apportionment of 1838 as a homestead, garden and orchard belonging to James Saddler, in the occupation of William Freeland. It is named as 'Lower Farm' at this date. The farm buildings were located slightly to the west of the farmhouse. [2]

An additional farm building was added to the south of the complex between 1870 and1898 [3, 4]. The site is named as 'Farlington Marsh Farm' on maps between 1870 and 1910 [3, 4, 5], the name changing to 'Lower Farlington Farm' by 1932 [6]. The farmhouse and outbuildings were demolished post-1952 and the area was developed for housing [7].
