Full Description

A deposit, interpreted as backfill to the outer moat of the 17th century town defences, was recorded in two trenches during an archaeological evaluation in Ravelin Park in 1972. The first trench revealed a layer of disturbed brown soil and gravel less than a 1m thick, and 3.6m of loose orange sandy gravel containing a few red-brick fragments. The second trench contained a similar deposit, but the backfill was more mixed.

The moat was constructed during the 1660s-1680s by Sir Bernard de Gomme and was infilled during the mid-18th century when the defences were remodelled by Desmaretz.
