Monument MPM1886 - Wesley Memorial

Memorial in the form of an elm tree and stone tablet with plaque, marking the site where John Wesley preached during the 18th century. The tablet is a replacement erected in 1977 and the elm was planted post-1984.

Memorial located in John Wesley Gardens, in the form of an elm tree and stone tablet with plaque. The base stone is a replacement erected in 1977, and bears the inscription 'This tablet is a replacement for the original bronze plaque lost from this site in 1977'. A new elm was planted post-1984, as the one planted in 1909 was missing by this date.

The original memorial was an elm tree identified by an inscription on a bronze plaque set on a rectangular concrete base. The plaque reads '1703 John Wesley 1791. Near this plaque stood a massive elm beneath which John Wesley preached during his ministry. This elm died eventually and in the centre of its shell the young elm now growing was planted by the following in the year 1909:- the Reverend A. A. L. Gedge, B.A., Chaplin to the Forces, Hilsea; John Doe, Verger, Hilsea Garrison Church'.
