Full Description
Fountain situated in Commercial Road shopping precinct at the junction with Arundel Street, erected to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 1977. Unveiled by Earl Mountbatten of Burma, when Admiral of the Fleet, on 30th November 1977.
The fountain was designed by the then City Architect, Ken Norrish. It is surrounded by life size bronzed glass fibre replicas of eight of the Queen's beasts which stood at the entrance to Westminster Abbey at the Coronation. The beasts hold heraldic shields of the Queen's ancestors. The base of the fountain is circular and is made of precast Somerset concrete with Derbyshire spar stone grit.
The fountain is situated at the point where the Queen completed her Jubilee walkabout in 1977. It was paid for by the former Landport's store and gifted to the City.
