Full Description

Wrought iron railings set between three gates with stone piers to the former Victoria Barracks. Victoria Barracks was built using convict labour in 1879. The barracks were demolished c1968 and the site was redeveloped as the Pembroke Park housing estate. The railings and gates now enclose the estate.

The railings consist of square balusters with shaped tops set in a granite base. The upper flat horizontal rail has a spiked head set on top between each upright. The stone gate piers have wrought iron gates between them. The gates at the entrance to Chatham Drive and on the corner with Pembroke Close have two stone piers capped with a stone ball finial. Between them, approximately 1m from each pier, are two wrought iron piers, each surmounted by a lamp. There are three sets of wrought iron gates, a central one between the iron piers for vehicles and pedestrian gates on either side. The gate at the entrance to Woodville Drive has three stone piers. There is a central gate for vehicles and a pedestrian gate on the north side.
