Monument MPM1935 - Submerged Barrier

Submerged barrier, also referred to as a 'submarine' barrier, situated in the Solent between Southsea beach and Horse Sand Fort. Constructed c1905-1909 to prevent enemy vessels accessing Spithead and Portsmouth Harbour.

Submerged barrier, also referred to as a 'submarine' barrier, situated in the Solent between southsea beach and Horse Sand Fort. The barrier is approximately 3300m long and consists of a line of square concrete blocks and piles of varying heights. The barrier was constructed c1905-1909 in order to prevent enemy vessels gaining access to Spithead and Portsmouth Harbour. Horse Sand and the other Solent forts were rearmed from 1892 to guard against the threat of attack from fast torpedo boats.
