Monument MPM1949 - 14th-15th century stone wall, Oyster Street

Section of loosely built stone wall recorded during excavations in Oyster Street between 1968 and 1971. The wall was dated to a 14th-15th century phase of occupation and may have represented a late-14th century attempt at land reclamation.

Loosely built stone wall recorded during excavations in Oyster Street between 1968 and 1971. The remaining section of wall was 10m long and was on a north-south alignment with two small projections. It was situated 2m west of the existing shoreline. The wall was dated to a 14th/15th century phase of occupation. It was not possible to ascertain what function the wall would have performed. As it was positioned so close to the shoreline, it may have represented a late-14th century attempt at land reclamation. [1, p.46]
