Full Description
This property appears to be a building (or part of a building) marked on the 1860 Ordnance Survey map as a laundry associated with the former Lieutenant Governor's residence, the main quarters of which stood on the High Street. It was part of a range of buildings together with a stable and coach house which occupied an area of c31m along the south-east side of St Thomas' Street, to the rear of the garden attached to the Governor's residence. The main buildings of the Governor's residence had been replaced by 1952. The stable and coach house appear to have been demolished around the time the entire site was redeveloped in the 1970s and the laundry building appears to be the only structure belonging to the complex that has survived.
At some point between 1910 and 1932 an extension appears to have been added to the rear of the laundry building. It is unclear whether this incorporated a harness room that was situated behind it on earlier maps. An extension is still visible in an aerial photograph dating to between 1950 and 1965 and this obscures the laundry building, of which only the roof can be seen.
The property is a two-storey brick building with a plain tile roof. There are five 12 pane sash windows under gauged brick arches and one bricked up window on the front elevation. Three stone steps lead to the front door which has a semi-circular over light. There are two rounded brick arches above the door.
