Monument MPM1962 - Limestone Wall, King's Bastion

Part of a substantial limestone wall revealed during an archaeological evaluation of King's Bastion in 1992. The wall was found in an area to the north-east of the main bastion work. It had once formed part of the revetment wall to an outer rampart and the wall of the moat.

Part of a substantial limestone wall revealed during an archaeological evaluation of King's Bastion in 1992. The wall had once formed the north-east scarp revetment of the fausse-braye (outer rampart) and wall of the moat. It was revealed 0.45m below the modern ground level in an area to the northeast of the main bastion work. The wall measured 1.8m in section and was followed to a depth of 2.50m below ground level. Only two blocks of facing stone were intact at this point. Further excavation was not possible due to the loose backfill of the moat which contained brick and rubble.
