Monument MPM1965 - Wall, south side of Ports Creek

An east-west 'retaining' wall recorded on the south side of Ports Creek to the east of the railway bridge during a watching brief on the Anchorage Park coastal defence scheme in 2015. The wall dated to the 20th century.

An east-west 'retaining' wall recorded on the south side of Ports Creek to the east of the railway bridge during a watching brief on the Anchorage Park coastal defence scheme in 2015. The wall had been constructed of a single course of granite cobbles facing the tide, bonded with sandy yellowish gray loose concrete with a solid reinforced concrete base. Loose material forming the back of the wall constisted of broken fragments of reinforced concrete, brick fragments, plastic waste material and concrete slabs.

It was thought that the wall may have dated to the 1970s redevelopment of the area or earlier in the 20th century. It did not appear to be associated with the railway bridge or Hilsea Lines. The wall was demolished as part of the coastal defence works.
