Full Description

Remaining buildings to Great Salterns Farm, now in use as Portsmouth City Council's stray dog kennels. A homestead and farm buildings appear to have been constructed on the site between 1773 and 1810.

The Great Salterns Estate was reclaimed from marshland in the 1660s. It was owned by the crown until it was sold to Francis Sharp in 1830. The farm is marked on a plan of the Estate dated 1830 and Lewis' 1833 map of Portsmouth. The earliest map to show a building within the plot occupied by the homestead to the farm appears to be the 1810 Ordnance Survey map. The farm may have been called Tangier Farm at this date as the name 'Tangier F(arm)' is slightly off-set above the site. As there are no buildings shown in this area on the Ordnance Office map of 1773, this would suggest the homestead was built sometime between 1773 and 1810. Land is marked as 'The Farm belonging to the Great Salterns' on a map of c1790, although this area of the map is blank as it fell outside the parish of Portsea. The Great Salterns Estate was sold to the Portsmouth Corporation in 1920. Great Salterns Farm is marked on maps until at least 1952. The site and remaining buildings is still within the ownership of Portsmouth City Council and are used as stray dog kennels.
