Find Spot MPM1975 - Clay pipe and 18th-19th pottery, Southsea Castle Glacis

Finds recovered during an excavation in the glacis of Southsea Castle in 1967. According to the Portsmouth Museum collections database these comprise 18th-19th pottery, two 'non stirrups' (?), clay pipes and metalwork. Museum Accession No: 1967/39.

A report in the Portsmouth Evening News stated the pottery was 17th-19th century in date and that the finds had accumulated between 1683 and 1814. They were thought to have been domestic rubbish from the castle which had been tipped on the glacis (built by de Gomme in 1683) which was covered by later earthworks constructed in 1814.
