Monument MPM2009 - Early 20th century features, University of Portsmouth, North Campus

Two foundation trenches and a large feature, possibly relating to an early 20th century rectangular enclosure/building, recorded during a watching brief by Southampton Archaeology Unit in 2007. One of the foundation trenches contained a brick wall, the second a red brick wall with limestone blocks.

Several c. early 20th century features were recorded during a watching brief by Southampton Archaeology Unit in 2007. The observations were made during groundworks for Building 1 at the University of Portsmouth's North Campus in Lion Terrace.

The features consisted of two foundation trenches and a large feature 8.7m long/wide and 1.4m deep. They were interpreted as possibly relating to a rectangular enclosure, possibly a building, shown on the 1938 Ordnance Map.

One foundation trench contained a brick wall of four courses. The second was 2m wide and contained a foundation of red brick with limestone blocks laid on top.

The large feature contained three fills. The earliest was c200m thick and contained fragments of coal, charcoal and cinders. Above this was a c700mm layer containing fragments of brick. The upper fill was c800mm thick and contained fragments of brick rubble.
