Full Description

A late 19th/early 20th century brick structure was recorded during a watching brief by Southampton Archaeology Unit in 2007. The observations were made during groundworks for Building 1 at the University of Portsmouth's North Campus in Lion Terrace. This structure had previously been exposed during an archaeological evaluation on the same site in 2006 (see MPM1093).

The rectangular brick structure was c2.2m wide and had a concrete foundation. It was exposed at the junction of an 18th century curtain wall and buttress which belonged to the Portsea line of fortifications (see MPM2008).

The concrete layer may have formed part of the surface of an enclosed area with a curved northern boundary, possibly a yard, shown on 1938 Ordnance Survey map. The brick structure was thought to relate to a short, angled spur wall on the south side of the curved boundary.

The same structure had previously been exposed during an archaeological evaluation on the same site in 2006 (see MPM1093).
