Monument MPM2017 - Possible military training trench, north of Mill Lane

Possible early 20th century military training trench recorded to the north of Mill Lane during an archaeological evaluation in 2021. The trench appeared to run in a zig-zag pattern.

Possible early 20th century military training trench recorded in a trial trench during an archaeological evaluation in 2021.

The trench was observed as a ditch running east/west that appeared to be zig-zag shaped. Two slots were excavated within the ditch to ascertain its nature. Both had a sharp break of slope, angular edges and a u-shaped base. Identified as a possible 20th century military training trench, similar in shape and size to those recorded at Southwick Hill Crossroads (MPM1969). The trench did not appear to correspond to cropmarks shown on historic aerial photographs. It was suggested that it may also be associated with Second World War anti-tank ditches recorded further south (MPM1613).

The presence of this and a second trench recorded during the same archaeological evaluation (see MPM2016) was thought to suggest a wider network of military trenches is present along the ridge between Fort Widley and the Southwick roundabout as well as in the SSSI area to the south. They are likely to have an added significance due to their association with Fort Widley to the east.
