Monument MPM2019 - 19th century levels, Dockyard smithery site

Levels removed from the site of a 19th century smithery/foundry (No. 1 Smithery) in Portsmouth Dockyard in 2021. Features included a brick structure with a tunnel entrance, tram lines, cast iron equipment and a chimney base.

Archaeological levels from the site of a 19th century smithy/foundry (No. 1 Smithery) were removed from ground on the west side of Building 1-209 in Portsmouth Dockyard (H.M. Naval Base) in 2021.

A number of features were uncovered which are understood to have included: cast iron billets; a brick structure with the remnants of an entrance to a tunnel; what was thought to have been a drop hammer anvil with a concrete base; a tunnel opening approximately 8m long; tram lines extending into the site by 15m; cast iron equipment (possibly including a furnace with flue/chimney); Chimney base 5m high by 4m diameter; 3 timber piles with a 10 inch diameter.
