Full Description
Site of No. 1 Smithery built in 1852 on reclaimed land in Portsmouth Dockyard. The 1852 smithery replaced a Georgian Smithery which had been located at the corner of Victoria Road and Main Road.
The building is marked as an Engine Smithy on the 1:500 1860 ordnance survey map, with a large chimney at it's centre. The building and chimney are still marked on the 1952 ordnance survey map, although it is not marked as a smithy. The site was later used as Store 30.
Archaeology relating to the smithy was uncovered at the site in 2021 after the store was demolished . See MPM2019.
