Monument MPM2039 - Ceramic tile, north-east of Dry Dock No.3, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Ceramic tile recorded in a trial pit excavated to the north-east of Dry Dock No.3 in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in 2008. It was suggested the tile may belong to a surface associated with an earlier structure, or it may have been related to later services as two cables were observed in the deposit immediately above.

A ceramic tile was recorded in a trial pit excavated to the north-east of Dry Dock No.3 in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in 2008. It was suggested the tile may belong to a surface associated with an earlier structure, or it may have been related to later services as two cables were observed in the deposit immediately above.

The tile was encountered beneath a 0.25m thick sandy silt layer of made ground with frequent fragments of ceramic building material, clay lumps and sub-angular flints. Two service cables were also observed within this deposit. Above this layer was a 0.15m layer of brick rubble overlain by a 0.20m thick layer of concrete which formed the modern ground surface.
