Monument MPM2041 - Linear features, car park adjacent to Laying Out Shed, Fort Cumberland

Three linear features recorded during a watching at Fort Cumberland in 2001/2 in a trench excavated in the car park adjacent the Laying Out Shed. A trench for a modern telecom cable had cut two earlier features comprising a cut for a foul drain and a cut containing a lead water pipe. The latter possibly related to 19th century improvements to the plumbing and water supply at the fort.

Three linear features were recorded during a watching at Fort Cumberland in 2001/2 in a trench excavated in the car park adjacent the Laying Out Shed.

The first feature was a trench for a modern telecom cable which had cut the fills of two earlier features (cuts). One of these was a cut for a foul drain 6m long by 1.77m wide aligned east-west. The second feature was on a ENE-WSW alignment, 0.48m wide and exposed to a length of 10.2m. This cut contained a lead water pipe 1 1/2 inches in diameter which would have extended to the north-eastern corner of the 18th century brick Storehouse building (located to the south-west of the car park). It was thought that this may have related to 19th century improvements to the plumbing and water supply at the fort, possibly dating to when the Storehouse was converted into a hospital in the mid to late 1850s.
