Monument MPM2042 - Parade ground and garden deposits, former officer's blocks, Fort Cumberland

Layers relating to the surface of the parade ground and soil beds from gardens that were once situated in front of the officer's blocks at Fort Cumberland were recorded during a watching brief in 2001/2.

A trench excavated during a watching brief at Fort Cumberland in 2001/2 in front of Houses 1-4 (former officer's blocks) cut through gravel layers and buried surfaces that had formed the parade ground. Layers of dark soil (recorded as mixed garden soil) and layers containing varying amounts of brick hardcore were also recorded. The dark soil was presumed to have been from gardens in front of the officer's blocks shown in photographs taken around 1920. These were later grassed over and by the 1990s had been replaced by gravel beds.
