Monument MPM2045 - Bomb Crater, counterscarp wall, Fort Cumberland

Second World War bomb crater in the counterscarp wall outside the central bastion at Fort Cumberland. The crater was made by the impact of a bomb dropped on the fort in a German raid on the 26th August 1940. It was partially excavated in 1999 in order to ascertain the level of damage to the counterscarp wall which had been breached by the bomb.

Prior to excavation the crater was visible as a hollow c. 8m x 4m x 2m. The crater had been filled with a layer of rubbish beneath which were several distinct layers of backfilled gravel.
