Second World War bomb crater in the parapet wall on top of the covered way to the north of the central bastion at Fort Cumberland recorded during an excavation in 1999.

Second World War bomb crater in the parapet wall on top of the covered way to the north of the central bastion at Fort Cumberland. The crater was made by the impact of a bomb dropped on the fort in a German raid on the 26th August 1940. The western part of the crater was excavated in 1999 in order to ascertain the level of damage to the parapet wall which had been breached by the bomb. The fill consisted of loose gravel containing red brick fragments. The crater was backfilled to the level of the covered way following the excavation.
