Monument MPM2057 - 19th century and Edwardian promenade, Southsea Castle

The remains of earlier promenade surfaces dating to the 19th century and Edwardian period recorded during archaeological monitoring for the Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme within the area of the promenade on the south side of Southsea Castle.

The remains of a 19th century promenade surface were recorded by Wessex Archaeology during the monitoring of geotechnical investigations for the Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme in 2020. Limestone cobbles were observed directly beneath the modern ground surface in several trial pits within the area of the promenade adjacent to the south side of Southsea Castle. [1]

Sections of the Edwardian promenade were also observed by wessex Archaeology during a watching brief for the Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme which took place between 2022 and 2024. These sections were recorded as being made up of stone blocks approximately 0.20m x 0.15m. The exact location is not recorded. [2]
