Monument MPM2143 - Medieval Pottery, Portsmouth Power Station

Four small sherds of 13th-14th century domestic coarseware were recovered during excavations within the coal yard at the Portsmouth Power Station site in 1984. The pottery was the only evidence of medieval occupation found during the excavation.

A circa early 14th century chapel dedicated to the Blessed Mary of Close, called Our Lady of Close's Chapel, is known from historical sources to have once stood in the north-west corner of the old town (MPM1547). However, no evidence of a chapel was found within the limits of the excavation.

Early 17th century burials (MPM1222), evidence of 17th-18th century occupation (MPM1223), and the remains of the former Colewort Barracks (MPM380) were also encountered on the site.

The excavation archive is held by Portsmouth Museum Service under the Accession number 1984/105.
