Full Description
A section of tramline was uncovered in Mile End Road southbound during work to install a new electrical circuit in 2025.
The tramline was encountered approximately 450mm below the road surface in a trench approximately 1100mm deep by 1200mm wide. A paved area between the rails (the original road surface for the tramline) was also exposed.
The rails were preserved in situ with the area infilled around them. However, the paved surface was too fragile and had to be removed. A CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator) used during the works detected the tramline continuing north towards Rudmore Roundabout.
The tramline was located within the inside lane of the A3 Mile End Road Southbound approximately opposite 169 Estella Road. A rough point has been recorded on the map within this general area as the exact location was not recorded.
