Monument MPM2150 - Brick structure, Bandstand Field, Southsea

Brick structure observed in Bandstand Field during a a watching brief for the Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme. Probably associated with the miniature railway that operated within the field between the 1930s and 1980s.

Square brick built structure observed in Bandstand Field during a watching brief for the Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme. The structure consisted of a wall measuring 1.32m x 1.32m x 0.40m high which had been constructed using red machine made bricks bonded with lime mortar. A stone surface and broken concrete slabs lay adjacent to the wall. [1]

The structure was located approximately 5m from the current bandstand and is likely to have been associated with the miniature railway that operated within the field between the 1930s and 1980s. The location of the wall and adjacent features as indicated in the watching brief report appears to have been within the area of a structure related to the railway marked on the 1952 Ordnance Survey map.
