Site of the former Electricity Generating Station (Portsmouth Power Station), built 1894, and demolished in 1984 when the area was redeveloped as a housing estate.
An excavation on the site of the former coal yard in 1984 revealed a scatter of late 17th-18th century pottery, clay pipe and bottle glass over the southern part of the site (see MPM1223). A large quantity of similar material dating to c.1680-1700 was found in a large pit. Other features on the site includeded early 17th burials (see MPM1222) and the remains of the Colewort Barracks (see MPM380), the latter of which was demolished during the early 20th century when the Power Station was extended. The only medieval evidence found during the excavation were four small sherds of 13th-14th century domestic coarseware.
The excavation archive is held by Portsmouth Museum Service under the Accession number 1984/105.
