Summary
Site of the Portsmouth Borough Gaol built 1805-1809 in Penny Street. The Gaol was demolished in the late-19th century. The remains of walls and an archway were found during a watching brief within the grounds of Portsmouth Grammar School in 2005.

Full Description
Site of the Portsmouth Borough Gaol, built 1805-1809 in Penny Street. The Gaol was demolished in the late-19th century, and buildings belonging to the new Clarence Barracks were built on the site.
The remains of some of the walls and an archway belonging to the gaol were revealed during a watching brief at Portsmouth Grammar School in 1995, when an extension was added to the new school theatre.
