Monument MPM397 - St Mary's Church (Chapel of Ease) Portsmouth

Site of the 19th century St. Mary's Church (Chapel of Ease) Highbury Street, Old Portsmouth. Built c1839 and designed by Thomas Ellis Owen. Also known as St. Mary Colewort. The church was demolished in 1921.

Site of the former 19th century Anglican Church of St Mary, Highbury Street. The church, which opened in 1839, was a Chapel of Ease to St Thomas', and was also known as St Mary Colewort. It was a stone built church designed by Thomas Ellis Owen in the Gothic style, with a nave and chancel. The church was demolished in 1921. [1]

A churchyard was located next to St Mary's. This area had been used as a burial ground since at least the 17th century (known previously as 'Colewort Garden Burial Ground'), burials ceasing when Highland Road Cemetery was opened in 1854.
