Monument MPM459 - ABOUKIR MEMORIAL

Monument to the officers and men of H.M.S. Aboukir who died during an epidemic of yellow fever in Jamaica in 1873-74. Built c1875, restored in 1984.

Stone obelisk bearing the inscriptions 'Erected by Commodore A.F.R. De Horsey, A.D.C., the Officers and men 1873-1874 on board H.M.S. Aboukir. In memory of 48 Officers and Men who died during the epidemic of yellow fever on board H.M.S. Aboukir at Jamaica in 1873-74'. A bronze plaque on the monument contains the inscription 'Restored in 1984 by the descendants of Mr A.E. Thomas and Mrs E.E. Thomas'. The monument was built c1875 by Baker of Southsea.
