Monument MPM465 - ROYAL NAVAL WAR MEMORIAL

Royal Naval War memorial commemorating the officers and ratings of the port of Portsmouth who died at sea during the First and Second World Wars.

Royal Naval war memorial. First World War part 1920-24, by Sir Robert Lorimer. Second World War part 1955, by Sir Edward Maufe. Portland stone. Slightly tapered 4-sided column on stepped base rising from plinth, diminishing steps at top, upper 2 octagonal crowned by feature of ships prows and bronze winged figures bearing copper globe finial. The plinth has angled pedestal with 4 carved reclining lions. The Second World War memorial added to the north with low walled enclosure, quadrant arms ending in winged pavilions each barrel-vaulted with curved pediments and open Ionic columned sides. Facing north are 2 pairs of tall pedestals surmounted by rampant lion and unicorn. A fine example of its type, of which identical examples exist in the naval ports of Chatham and Plymouth.
