Building MPM513 - 5 GRAND PARADE

A mid-17th century double-pile house, with extensive alterations. A survey in 1994/5 revealed that parts of the original structure, including its timber framework, remained. Memorial plaque on first floor wall.

This building was originally a mid-17th century double-pile house, although later alterations have changed its structure and appearance considerably. These have included the rebuilding of the house front, alterations to the roof line and extensions to the rear of the property.

A survey undertaken by Portsmouth Museum Service during extensive renovation work in 1994/5, revealed that parts of the original 17th century structure remained. Part of the preserved south east gable on the first floor had retained its timber framework and red-brick nogging. A blocked window in the centre of the gable indicated that the south east wall had not originally been a party wall (partition between buildings). Red brick fireplaces on both the ground and first floors were thought to belong to the original structure, and were largely intact.

House. Early C19. Stuccoed. Plain tile roof, with brick stack to left. 3 storeys, 2 bays. Door to right with 4 moulded panels and 2 glazed panels. On left 3 sash windows with leaded lights. First floor: 2-leaf French windows with margin glazing leading to iron balcony with supporting brackets, anthemion-style railing panels and metal tent roof canopy. Second floor: 12-pane sash windows. Coped parapet. INTERIOR not inspected.

A memorial plaque on the wall above the 1st floor balcony commemorates two brothers killed during the First World War. The inscription reads:

'Mrs A. F. Bingham Powell
bequeathed this house to
the Forces Help Society in
memory of her two sons
killed in action in the
1914-1918 War
Captain John Bingham Powell R. M.
Lieut. Patrick Bingham Powell R. N.'
