Summary

Two gravestones and tombs side by side dating to c1843 and c1849. Refurbished 1992. The memorials relate to the family of Admiral Sir Francis W Austen KCB, who was the uncle of the novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817).

Full Description

2 gravestones and tombs side by side. c1843 and c1849. Refurbished 1992. Ashlar. Gravestones with surface moulded stone tombs and footstone. On left the gravestone has inscription "In memory of Cassandra Eliza, second daughter of Admiral Sir Francis W Austen KCB, and Mary his wife who departed this life the 6th May 1849 aged 35 years." Footstone has inscription "C.E.A. 1849". Right gravestone has inscription "Here rest the remains of Martha the wife of Vice Admiral Sir Francis Austen K.C.B., Beloved, esteemed and respected by all who know her. She closed a life of Christian benevolence and practical piety deeply lamented by her surviving relations, Jan 24th 1843 aged 72 years". Inscription on footstone reads "M.A. 1843" Admiral Sir Francis W Austen was the uncle of the novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817).
