Building MPM647 - SOUTH MEDINA FARMHOUSE

Former farmhouse to South Wymering Farm (formerly Wymering House Farm and Lower Farm), built c1830s.

The farmhouse is marked on the 1839 tithe map of Wymering as 'W g (Wymering) House Farm', with an out building to the south [8]. The accompanying tithe apportionment records it as the homestead of John Martin Esquire [9]. Martin also owned Wymering manor, the homestead being the home farm to the manor house. The name of the farm is not recorded on the 1870 Ordnance Survey Map. The farm is marked as 'Lower Farm' on the 1898 map and 'South Wymering Farm' on maps from 1910- 1952. [2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ]. It was also known locally as 'Day's Farm' as it was run by Charles Day in 1925 [7]. The farm is still marked an ordnance survey map dated 1952.

South Wymering Farm was one of three farms in Wymering (see MPM1354 and MPM1809). Three messuages/tenement farm lands in the parish of Wymering are mentioned in a will of William Elson of Widley dated 1747, but the exact locations of these are not known, and the parish extended beyond the settlement of Wymering [10]. Wymering had been a royal manor during the medieval period and is recorded in Domesday Book.

House. C1840. Flint. Welsh slate hipped roof, brick stack to left and right on rear pitch. 2 storeys, 2 bays. Quoins, windows and door dressings have long and short stonework. At centre is a C20 recessed door with blinded fanlight set under round stone arch. To left and to right is a 2-leaf 8-pane C20 French casement each set under cambered stone arch; cast-iron verandah with trellis supports and cresting across front with tented roof. First floor has two 16-pane sashes. (Verandah supports at time of survey removed and being repaired for refixing). INTERIOR not inspected. [1]
