Find Spot MPM7 - Post-Medieval Pottery from Penny Street

Material excavated by Portsmouth Museum Society during the redevelopment of the George Hotel site (now occupied by George Court) in 1952-1953. Finds included pottery dating from the 16th to the early-19th century and a few pot sherds possibly of medieval date. Glass bottles, wine glasses and clay tobacco pipes were also recovered.

Material excavated by Portsmouth Museum Society during redevelopment of the George Hotel site in 1952-54. The site is now occupied by George Court. Although recorded as Penny Street, investigations were carried out in the area originally used as the rear yard of the George Hotel, accessed from Penny Street. [1]

Pottery, including coarsewares of 16th-18th century date and fine ware of 17th-early 19th century were recovered, together with a few possible medieval sherds. Glass bottles, wine glasses and clay tobacco pipes were also recovered. A report in the Portsmouth Evening News published on the 21st January 1953 also mentioned clay wig curlers amongst the finds.
