Full Description
88 St Thomas' Street built 1837 by Thomas Ellis Owen. Formerly the Portsmouth Savings Bank (mid-19th century, shown on 1860 map, not in Kelly's of 1881 onwards). [1, 2, 3]

Bank, now 2 houses. Early and mid C19, late C20 alterations. Stuccoed. No.86 has Welsh slate roof, roof to No.88 concealed. Rendered stack at centre. No.86 one storey with basement, three bays, No.88 one storey, one bay. No.86 has C20 door on left with fanlight, set in round-arched surround, up flight of 7 stone steps with attached rails. On right 2 round-headed sashes of 16 panes and 12 panes, pilasters flanking centre sash. Door unmoulded band over, and parapet coping broken over centre window. C20 dormer. No.88: deep vermiculated plinth, heavy rusticated quoins, and wide pilasters flanking windows. 5-panelled door on right within splayed corner with fanlight, round-arched surround with voussoirs aligned to courses and vermiculated keystone, flanked by attached bonded Doric columns and pilasters. On left large sash and 3 similar sashes to right return, each of 12 panes. Entablature over with wide projecting cornice and guttae. Balustraded parapet. INTERIOR not inspected.
