Monument MPM742 - CHARLES MCCHEANE DRINKING FOUNTAIN AT JUNCTION OF WESTERN PARADE

Drinking fountain built 1889, restored in 1977. The fountain was erected as a memorial to Charles E McCheane, a founder of the Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Yacht Club, who died in 1888.

Monument. 1889 restored 1977. Stone. Drinking fountain with 2 opposed water points and 4 basins with chained iron cups. Inscription reads "To the memory of Charles E McCheane who died November 2nd 1888. This fountain was erected November 1889 by a few of his friends belonging to the Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Yacht Club of which he was a founder in the year 1880". Bronze plaque reads:- "This fountain was restored by the residents of Castle Road area and the Portsmouth City Council to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II 1952-77".
