Early-20th monument commemorating the Far East Commission of H.M.S. Orlando 1899-1902. The monument contains a replica of a bronze Chinese bell 'taken at the capture of the North-West Fort Taku, June 1890, and brought home by H.M.S. Orlando.'

Full Description

Early-20th monument to H.M.S. Orlando. Solid stone tent roof with ball finial supported by brown polished marble squat columns on white marble base. Elaborate monument in form of miniature Chinese temple. Commemorates the Far East Commission of H.M.S. Orlando 1899-1902.

The monument contains a replica of a bronze Chinese bell 'taken at the capture of the North-West Fort Taku, June 1890, and brought home by H.M.S. Orlando.' The original bell was returned to China in 2004/5. Chinese inscription on bell, the translation of which 'Come pleasant weather and gentle rain. The empire happy, at peace again' is inscribed on tablet below. Inscriptions list those who died during the Commission and refer to the capture of Fort Taku, Trensin and the defence of the legation Peking.
