Monument MPM806 - STATUE OF WILLIAM III TO SOUTH WEST OF BUILDING NUMBER 1/87C (BUILDING NUMBER 1/87C NOT INCLUDED)

Gilt statue of William III by Van Noss, located in the Porters Lodge Garden in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The statue was presented to the Principal Officers of the Yard by Richard Norton of Southwick House in 1718.

Life-size statue of William III by Van Noss dated 1718. The gilt statue depicts the monarch dressed as a Roman General crowned with a laurel wreath. It is mounted on an ashlar plinth and concrete podium. Originally stood on the parade ground, in front of Long Row. Later moved to the front of Admiralty House before being brought to its present location. [1]

Presented to the Principal Officers of the Yard by Richard Norton of Southwick House in 1718. Norton was responsible for supplying oak to the dockyard for many years. It is mounted on an ashlar plinth and concrete podium. The statue originally stood in the middle of the Great Parade Ground, and was later placed in front of Admiralty House. It is now located in the Porters Lodge Garden. The podium bears the inscription 'GULIELMO III Optomi regi MDCCXVIII Ricardus Norton, humillime, D. D.' [2]

Restoration work was carried out on the statue between 1967 and 1968. [2]
