Type and Period (1)
Full Description
According to White's 'History, Gazetteer and Directory of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight' published in 1878, Drayton Manor was built in 1872 by a Miss Secker 'on the site of the old Manor House' [1]. The present building was built on the site of the farmhouse to Lower Drayton Farm which is marked on the 1870 ordnance survey map as Lower Drayton [2].
The ordnance survey maps published between 1898 and 1952 show a building approximately twice the size of the current house, suggesting the western half was demolished at some point post-1952. [3-6]
It has been suggested by C.R. Davey in an article in the Proceedings of the Hampshire Field Club and Archaeology Society that Drayton Manor may have been built on the site of Beamonds House, a 16th century house belonging to the Pound family, owners of the manor of Beamonds. However, there are no historic sources e.g. maps or plans, which show or state where the house was located. [1]
